OBDSTAR ECU MASTER: How to Unlock BMW B48/B58 ECU in Bench Mode

No ECU opening. No soldering wires. OBDSTAR now supports Bench Mode unlocking and data read/write for locked BMW B48/B58 ECUs. This tutorial uses the MG1CS201 as an example to show how the new Bench Mode function works in practice.

Prepare the ECU and Cables

You’ll need:

The Bench Mode procedure avoids opening the ECU, removing resistors, or soldering wires. Once connected, the same setup is used for unlocking and ECU data read/write.

Select the Locked ECU

  1. Open ECU MASTER → ECU Flasher → ECM → Latest Version, then search for MG1CS201.
  2. Select Start → BMW, BOSCH, MG1CS201 (LOCKED), TC298TP → BENCH.
  3. Open Connector Pin Out, then open Dedicated Cable.

Entries marked LOCKED indicate the encrypted ECU type.

Connect and Unlock in Bench Mode

Connect the ECU using the ECM-003 cable and BENCH-DV1 cable according to the displayed pinout.

Once everything is connected, tap Connect. After the connection is successful, the ECU can be unlocked and the EEPROM and FLASH data can be read or written through the same connection.

Read the ISN Code

If the ISN is required, go to Special Functions → Read ISN Code.

Keep in mind that the Bench Mode unlock is temporary. After disconnecting the ECU, it must be unlocked again before the next operation. This is also the case with Boot Mode.

Workshop Notes

The C4-06 Adapter is still useful. It is not limited to BMW B48/B58 ECUs and can also be used for functions such as airbag reset, immobilizer data or PIN-code reading from modules including the instrument cluster, ELV and body control module, as well as unlocking other encrypted MD1/MG1 ECUs.
