OBDSTAR Encrypted MG1/MD1 ECU Unlock is a bench solution for unlocking encrypted Bosch MG1 and MD1 ECUs before Flash or EEPROM read/write. This FAQ covers compatible devices, required hardware, licensing, and key operating requirements.

Watch Video FAQs:

1. Device Compatibility

Q1. Which OBDSTAR devices support the unlock function?
The unlock function is supported by OBDSTAR X300 Classic G3 (Key Master G3), DC706, and ECU Master.

Q2. What adapters are required?

  • X300 Classic G3: MP001 Programmer (included) + C4-06 Adapter (optional)
  • DC706: MP001 Programmer (optional) + C4-06 Adapter (optional)
  • ECU Master: C4-06 adapter only (optional)

The OBDSTAR RH850/V850 Adapter Kit(C4-06) is a universal adapter for unlocking and reading/writing encrypted MG1 and MD1 ECUs.

2. Licensing

Q3. Do I need to pay extra to use the unlock function?
No. As long as your device has a valid annual subscription, the unlock function is included at no additional cost.

3. Unlock Procedure

Q4. Does unlocking require opening the ECU?
Yes. You must open the ECU case and solder the required pins to enter BOOT mode before unlocking.

Q5. Can I read or write the ECU with third-party tools after unlocking?
No. Both unlocking and ECU read/write must be performed with OBDSTAR devices. Once the ECU loses power, it automatically returns to the locked state.

4. Features

Q6. Does it support BMW ISN reading?
Yes. BMW ISN reading is supported. ISN modification is currently under development.

Q7. What ECU data can be read and written?
OBDSTAR supports Flash and EEPROM read/write. Flash read/write also includes checksum correction.

Q8. Is the ECU data encrypted after reading?
No. Data read by OBDSTAR devices is unencrypted and fully compatible with supported third-party tools.

5. Hardware & Power Requirements

Q9. Are dedicated harnesses available?
Yes. OBDSTAR is developing dedicated harnesses for different applications. For example, ECM-003 is designed for BMW B48, B57, and B58 ECUs to help reduce wiring errors during unlocking.

Q10. Is ECU unlocking risky?
Yes. ECU unlocking is an advanced bench procedure and should be performed by technicians with basic electronic repair experience.
Before unlocking:

  • Open the ECU carefully to avoid damaging the PCB.
  • Use stable wiring and prevent power interruptions during the process.
  • Handle SMD components carefully to avoid damaging pads or PCB traces.

Q11. What power supply should I use?
Use a professional regulated power supply rated at 60W or higher with an output voltage of 13–14V.
If you’re using ECU Master, the included power supply is suitable. Avoid unstable or non-professional power supplies, as voltage fluctuations can damage the ECU.

Who Is This Function For?

This function is designed for ECU tuning workshops, automotive locksmiths, and diagnostic technicians performing bench work on encrypted Bosch MG1 and MD1 ECUs. It is especially useful when Flash or EEPROM read/write requires ECU unlocking before programming or data backup.
